Students Who Sell Textbooks to MyBookBuyer.com Help To Support Worthy Causes

Milpitas, Calif. (Vocus) November 17, 2009 -- Whether they realize it or not, the students who sell textbooks (http://www.mybookbuyer.com) to MyBookBuyer.com are helping to make a real difference. MyBookBuyer.com makes its money by reselling the used textbooks students sell when they are done with them at the end of the semester. Now the textbook buyback company is letting those same students help decide how much of that profit should go to charity.

MyBookBuyer.com is engaging their base of student customers through their Facebook Fan Page. The site first tested the idea with a fundraising drive in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Knowing that students had the desire, if not the financial means to contribute to such a worthy cause, MyBookBuyer.com pledged to donate a dollar for every person who joined their Facebook fan page in the month of October to help fight breast cancer, allowing the students who sell used textbooks (http://www.mybookbuyer.com/sell-used-textbooks.htm) on the site to show their support without having to open their wallets.

The response was overwhelming. In less than a month, over 1,500 students showed their support by joining the fan page. On November 3, MyBookBuyer.com made good on their pledge and posted a donation of $1,522 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Company founder Michael Der gives the credit to the students.

“We’re still here when students want to sell textbooks,” he says, but “when we give them the opportunity to help a great cause they really respond.”

Every year more than 40,000 women in the United States and over 500,000 women worldwide die of breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen foundation is the leader in the fight against breast cancer. Since 1982 it has raised over $1.3 billion toward raising awareness and funding research through well-known events such as the National Race for the Cure, the Breast Cancer 3-Day and Passionately Pink for the Cure.

The Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser was such a success that the textbook buyback (http://www.mybookbuyer.com/college-textbook-buy-back.htm) site is doing it again.

This time they are taking their cue from the upcoming holiday season, and are raising money for Toys for Tots. If they reach 3,000 fans on their Facebook fan page by December 15, they are pledging to donate $500 to Toys for Tots to help less fortunate children.

Toys for Tots is organized through the United States Marine Corps Reserve. Since 1947, they have collected and distributed toys across the country during the holidays. Last year, the program distributed over 16.2 million toys to over 7.6 million underprivileged children. The holidays can be a trying time for low-income and otherwise less fortunate families.

Our men and women in uniform, who already do so much to serve our country, go above and beyond the call of duty each year, helping to provide a little joy during the holidays to children who otherwise would have little to celebrate. MyBookBuyer.com is proud to join them in this noble effort, and is calling on students to go beyond selling textbooks (http://www.mybookbuyer.com/selling-textbooks.htm) and help to make a real difference in the lives of children in need.

Michael Der says he is confident that students will again rise to the challenge.

“The desire to contribute, to make a difference is already there. We’re just providing a way to channel that desire,” he says.

In view of the support shown by students in the past, MyBookBuyer.com hopes to achieve the 3,000 fan benchmark by the December 15 deadline. December marks the beginning of one of the busiest times of year for the site as students begin to sell back textbooks (http://www.mybookbuyer.com/sell-back-textbooks.htm) from the fall semester. The site plans to use the opportunity to remind students that they can help support Toys For Tots by joining their Facebook fan page.
